Language Learning Activities to Navigate Xreading.com

Time not set

Xreading.com is an online extensive reading resource with over 1000 graded readers. For students new to using the website, especially lower-level learners with a limited vocabulary, navigating Xreading in English and selecting books can sometimes be difficult or time-consuming. One presenter at a previous ERAW said his students took about 45 minutes to select a book. In order to help students better understand Xreading vocabulary and choose more books of interest in a shorter time period, I have adapted a number of activities to Xreading that will both accomplish this while furthering students' language learning. This workshop will give teachers fun ideas to introduce and review keywords needed to make searching and deciding on books easier and quicker. This will hopefully lead to students of all levels being able to make more informed reading choices, easier to accomplish class reading goals, and allow the students to spend more time reading.

I have been teaching English for over 15 years in Germany, Finland, the US, and now based in Taiwan. I currently teach in the Department of Foreign Languages at Overseas Chinese University. I am about to begin a PhD in Linguistics at National Taiwan Normal University with my research focus being on L2 Syntax Acquisition. I am a big advocate for extensive reading and use graded readers and ER myself to acquire Mandarin Chinese. In the future, I plan on conducting more research on the effectiveness of ER.
