Graded Readers: Challenges, Opportunities and Creative Rewards
This panel discussion brings together experienced graded reader authors to explore the unique challenges of creating engaging and impactful fiction and non fiction while working within strict linguistic constraints. The session will also examine what the key priorities for writers are, what opportunities and challenges the genre offers, and how teachers themselves can delve into the art of crafting stories of their very own for their students.

Michael Lacey Freeman has been working in the field of English Language Teaching for 30 years, both as a teacher and ELT author. He is also a storyteller and has travelled extensively around the world to tell his stories, and to spread the message that words are powerful. He has written material for many course books with publishers like OUP and Pearson and 21 of his graded readers have been published, seven of which have won international awards. In 2017 he was invited to be on the board of directors of the Extensive Reading Foundation and is currently interim chair of the newly formed Extensive Reading Association in Italy (ERA in Italy).

Dr. Rob Waring, is Emeritus Professor at Notre Dame Seishin University in Okayama and Visiting Professor at Thammasat University, Thaland. He is an acknowledged expert in Extensive Reading and vocabulary acquisition. He has published over 80 articles and has given hundreds of lectures, plenaries and featured speaker presentations in 32 countries. He is an Executive Board member of the Extensive Reading Foundation responsible for the promotion of Extensive Reading globally. He is also author and series editor of a six series of graded readers by various publishers and has recently published Teaching Extensive Reading in Another Language with Paul Nation.

Paul McAleese is an associate professor at Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) in Japan. Paul also runs Pomaka.com, a language-learning website and publisher of English-language graded readers.

Catriona has been working in Japan since the early 90s. She is interested in stories of all kinds and helping learners to find and develop their stories. She has published graded readers with Halico, Abax Japan and X Reading.
